ABOUT

The Bishop Gallery and acclaimed photographer Barron Claiborne are proud to present, “The King Of New York: Through The Lens of Barron Claiborne”, a tribute the Christopher Wallace (aka) Notorious BIG. In addition to the namesake piece “The Notorious B.I.G. as the King Of New York” or the K.O.N.Y., this exhibition includes a collection of B.I.G. photos that have never been shown publicly. Mr. Claiborne’s iconic photograph The K.O.N.Y.  is the last studio photograph taken of the late Christopher Wallace.  The photograph perfectly reflects the powerful style and mood of both artists, from Barron’s signature deeply saturated color palate to the intense look in Wallace’s eyes, the moment creating a image that cemented the late hip hop artist as The King of New York, and Claiborne as one of America’s most celebrated photographers. A master of his craft, with a career spanning 3 decades, Claiborne’s photography has beautifully captured his diverse subjects, including his acclaimed Saints series “Illuminados Santos Negros”, refugee camps in Kenya, and celebrities like Danny Glover, Denzel Washington and Bjork and many others.  A prolific artist, Barron’s has worked in fashion, sports, portraiture, film, music videos, reportage and everything in between. The K.O.N.Y. photograph was taken in the shadows of the twin towers in Barron’s studio, the two had worked together previously.  Barron is also responsible for the first image of BIGGIE in a suit, in the regal image “Universal BIGGIE” wherein his alter ego Frank White was born.  Barron’s decision to crown the King will forever be a part of American music history. This exhibition celebrates the life of Christopher Wallace, in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, the place he called home.
