CYNTHIA FLEISCHMANN

Works     About

ABOUT

Since 2009, Cynthia Fleischmann has been using the naked human body as her canvas to create visual connections between person and place, inspired by animals. After applying a thin coat of paint onto her subject, insecurities and sexual preconceptions of nudity dissipate to reveal the natural form. She terms her photographs of this dialogue Bodypaintography.’

Her signatory red palms represent the internal blood flow that fuels the heart and mind, while also bringing to mind the hearts that have been stopped due to violent hands. They are our primal and binary connection to life, death and nature, and a symbol of humanity.

Bodypaintographies are mainly done in secret using natural lighting, but she does enjoy performing live bodypaintings in collaboration with other artists and their artworks such as Rirkrit Tiravanija and Zanele Muholi during ArtBasel 2011 (Switzerland), and Irina Gretchanaia, Sergey Fedotov and Leonor Anthony at Spectrum Miami, 2014 (Florida).

Her largest ‘performance’ project spans over the past seven years at Burning Man, Nevada, where she organizes and photographs the artistic happening called “Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust.” This project invites participants to unite naked, covering the body with dust, painted cracks and red hands to symbolize a beautiful connection between each other and the desert environment.

Cynthia has exhibited her bodypaintography photographs, paintings, and/or artist books at the Lowe Art Museum (Miami), The Coral Gables Museum, The Wynwood Building, GAB Studio (Wynwood), ArtSpace (Luzern), Galerie Zur Stockeregg (Zurich), ArtHouse429 (West Palm Beach) and within numerous art fairs including Spectrum Miami, Art Miami, Art Palm Beach, MIA SeaFair, CaneFair, and See.Me, taking over Times Square (New York). Her bodypaintography works are currently being represented by The Bishop Gallery in Brooklyn, NYC.

Cynthia’s work has been featured in CIRCLE Arts Foundation 2018, Meet Them Mondays Podcast 2017, DECO Drive Miami 2017, Bold Beauty Project 2016 (Miami), Sonntags BLICK Magazine 2016 (Zurich), Women In The World 2015, the New York Summer edition of FineArt Magazine 2014, in Day & NightGuide 2014 (Zurich & Luzern, Switzerland), Stories of U by the University of Miami, Best of College & High School Photography 2013 (published by Photographer's Forum) and at the Grand Prix de la Découverte, receiving the Juror Award of Merit for People/Portraits.

Cynthia grew up between Zurich, Switzerland and Dover, Massachusetts and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Miami in 2014.
