The Bishop Gallery is pleased to present Hip Hop At The End of World, photography exhibition and tilted book release by Ernie Paniccioli. Ernie Paniccioli, hailed by The New York Times as "the chronicler of hip - hop", and author of the best selling book Who Shot Ya, has been taking the most important photographs of the hip - hop scene for the last four decades, getting unprecedented access to such headliners as Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash,
Melle Mel, Notorious B.I.G, Tupac, Lauren Hill, and Snoop Dogg. To this day, Paniccioli’s photography remains the iconic chronicle of one of the most crucial movements in American music. In candid moments, Brother Ernie—who was inducted into the Hip - Hop Hall of Fame in 2014—captures the feel, and more importantly, the look of an era one that would forever transform fashion and popular culture. His latest book, HIP-HOP AT THE END OF THE WORLD: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF ERNIE PANICCIOLI, serves both as a career retrospective and a riveting behind - the -scenes view of the evolution of hip-hop, the styles that grew from it, and the artists who shaped it. After picking up a camera in the 1973 to document the graffiti art that dominated New York City, Paniccoli, known respectfully as Brother Ernie,started his journey of whole-heartedly capturing the hip-hop scene during its most fertile years. Always armed with a 35mm camera, he successfully photographed nearly every rapper of note since the genre's inception. Filled with over 250 color and black & white images — many that have never before been published — of legends like Ice Cube, LL Cool J, Naughty by Nature, 50 Cent, Lil' Kim, Flavor Flav, Queen Latifah, TLC, this book is set to become the new bible of hip-hop photography. HIP-HOP AT THE END OF THE WORLD is sure to become a classic on the subject and is required reading for fans of music, fashion, popular culture, and photography. Ernie Paniccioli is an American legendary photographer of hip hop culture. A Cree Native American, he grew up in Brooklyn, New York. His photography of hip hop began in the 1970s with shots of graffiti in New York. The hip-hop journalist Kevin Powell encouraged Paniccioli to make a book and in 2002, Who Shot Ya?: Three Decades of Hip-Hop Photography was published. Paniccioli's work has appeared in various magazines over a 30- year period, including: Rolling Stone, Vibe, The New York Times, Newsweek, Life, Spin California History, The Daily News, Elementary, Entertainment Weekly, The Final Call, Honey, Mass Appeal, and Murder Dog. The documentary The Other Side of Hip-Hop chronicles Paniccioli’s life and work and was the winner of the Big Apple Film Festival’s Best Documentary Award in 2007. . |
