ABOUT
The Bishop Gallery proudly presents Hasidim on the Beach, a photography exhibition by Judy Mauer that captures rare moments of the Hasidic community enjoying their sabbath on the sand, as any other beach goers would.
This never-before-seen body of work is an ongoing project that began 8 years ago after Mauer moved to Seagate, Brooklyn where she currently resides. With the beach as her backdrop, she captures the day-to-day experience of her neighbors. Mauer explains, "A hundred years ago, my grandparents emigrated from a shtetl in Eastern Europe. Eighteen years ago, I moved to a beach community near Coney Island called Seagate. Unbeknownst to me, there was a large community of Hasidim. They seem to be frozen in time, transported from another era to my backyard. I often ran into them on the beach and was drawn by their ability to remain in the 17th century while seamlessly participating in modern-day life. I am photographing them as a testament to all we have lost in the Holocaust, and as a celebration of our community in all its forms." Like Mauer the Bishop Gallery is located in a community with a noticeable Hasidic population. The gallery owners recall doing business and being cordial with their neighbors but still feel that there's an invisible wall that keeps more interaction from being had. "An exhibition like this makes that proverbial wall, less intrusive and provides an opportunity to have positive conversations about other cultures outside of our own", says gallery owner Stevenson Dunn. During the exhibition, there will be programming that involves members of the Hasidic community such as artist, business owners and even a Rabbi. Dunn passionately explains that, "We're using the opportunity of exhibiting these works as a tool to bridge the gap between cultures, and to us that's the beauty and power in the arts". Judy Mauer is a Brooklyn-born multi-disciplined artist. Judy Mauer came to photography after years of being a collaborative artist. She has worked in theater, music production, advertising and film. Her photography ranges in subject matter, from abstract to narrative. Though she has been a part of many group shows in the area, this will be her first solo-show in New York City. |
