ABOUT THE ARTIST
Charles Philippe Jean-Pierre is currently an adjunct professor at Howard University and holds his MFA from American University. His exhibitions include the U.S. State Department, IMF, IDB, Smithsonian, & Embassy of Haiti. He was a 2015 Obama White House invitee for arts in Youth Justice. His practice recognizes the erasure of our complex histories & challenges the narrative that we are perpetual outsiders. Jean-Pierre's work attempts to create the informed cultural context needed to make sense of the American connection to the global south, and vice versa.”
THE EXHIBITION
May 4th - June 1st, 2024
The Bishop Gallery is pleased to announce Drifting to The Mystical, a solo exhibition by conceptual artist Charles Philippe Jean-Pierre, curated by Yvena Despagne. The opening will be held from 6-8pm on May 4th at the Bishop Gallery in Brooklyn, New York.
In "Drifting to The Mystical," Jean-Pierre engages with Haitian folklore, mythology, and magical realism. A collection of new paintings, collage works, and sculptures, this new work by Jean-Pierre signals a bold redirection of his artistic vision, including his commitment to utilizing abstraction to convey new analytics of time and space.
“This exhibition intends to be a catalyst for introspection by offering viewers glimpses of my world and realms beyond the tangible into the celestial and ethereal,” said Jean-Pierre. “I found myself within a profound and transformative gravitational pull creating contrasting works tethered to the mystical. Both bodies of work intend to shift consciousness, foster dialogue and question understanding.” The exhibition draws inspiration from his travels throughout the Caribbean, Latin-America, and Africa following his father’s passing. Jean-Pierre’s practice has delved into two disparate expressions of an alternative universe. His abstract collages present as portals of fantasy, while a synthesis of collected artifact installations serve as meditations on displacement and transformation.
