The Bishop Gallery is pleased to present “ART-SYNTHESIS:THE ART OF MEKBIB GEBERSTADIK” a solo exhibition by Howard University MFA graduate Mekbib Gebertsadik. Curated by Howard University alum Kathryn Coney-Ali, this exhibition introduces the extraordinary talent of Gebertsadik, who redefines landscape painting through innovative techniques. Gebertsadik’s unique approach to art merges science, spirituality, and nature. Inspired by the intricate process of photosynthesis, he meticulously manipulates water(paint), air, and gravity to craft landscapes that merge his Ethiopian heritage with his American experiences. What distinguishes Gebertsadik’s work is his brushless technique. He forges a spiritual connection with his canvases, allowing paint to flow freely without preconceived notions. He utilizes air and gravity, employing gentle blowing and tilting motions to create vibrant nature-inspired images that also spotlight environmental concerns. Within his paintings, Gebertsadik employs holistic approaches, combining abstractions, symbolism, and naturalism to produce original visual impressions of nature. Color plays a pivotal role in his works, with each hue holding significant meaning. Blue symbolizes the infiniteness of life, while orange represents the energetic spark of existence. The synergy of these colors reflects the harmony between the natural and spiritual worlds. Though now residing in the United States, Geberstsadik’s early memories of Ethiopia and its landscapes remain an integral part of his artistic identity. These memories guide his pursuit of capturing light and creating forms through the manipulation of flowing colors. This personal narrative of journey and connection across generations is artfully conveyed through his work- a testament to his evolution as an artist and a legacy he imparts to his daughters.
